DETAILS ON REACH PROGRAM:

What is REACH?

REACH is a European Union regulation concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation & restriction of Chemicals, which entered into force on June 1st 2007.

REACH applies to substances manufactured or imported into the EU in quantities of 1 tonne or more per year. Manufacturers or importers of such substances are obliged to register them with the central European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) based in Helsinki. The main aim of REACH is to improve understanding of the environmental and human health risks resulting from the production and use of chemical substances. It is now the responsibility of the manufacturers of such substances to prove that the risks surrounding such products are suitably controlled, and not the public authorities. The burden of proof is hence reversed.

REACH at MSSA
REACH regulations required that all users declaring the same substance submit their registration request together.

To accomplish this joint responsibility, companies must use the Substance Information Exchange Forum (SIEF). An agreement must be reached for a member of the SIEF or a third party to carry out the analysis on behalf of the other participants. For sodium metal, MSSA Métaux Spéciaux was appointed to be the facilitator and principal registrant of the consortium established. To date, we have already registered sodium, chlorine and bleach. The registration process for our other products is ongoing in line with the deadlines stipulated by the REACH regulation.
